Human milk feeding is an essential part of establishing good nutrition, healthy weight, and reducing the risk of chronic disease, but too often families are faced with barriers that make it difficult or impossible to meet their infant feeding goals.
The CDC Hospitals Promoting Breastfeeding program provides critical support to advance breastfeeding continuity of care and increase access to lactation-friendly environments in states, hospitals, and communities. These high-value, low-cost public health interventions positively impact the health of communities, and they've never been more important.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has revealed significant gaps in our national capacity to coordinate infant and young child feeding in emergencies, destabilized maternity care practices that impact breastfeeding initiation, and deepened known disparities. As we continue to grapple with COVID-19 and its variants, recovery efforts must adapt to a population experiencing substantially higher stress levels, inactivity, and an ever-expanding obesity epidemic.
The President's Budget includes level funding of $9.5M from FY 2021 for the CDC Hospitals Promoting Breastfeeding program. Let's raise our voices together to call for increased investment of $20M for breastfeeding families!
